I’m keeping a close eye on this. While I don’t need it as I just upgraded my PC I’m

Interested in how it evolves. What the uptake will be and how people will use the steam machine in their gaming journeys. If I hadn’t updated in the summer I’d be wishlisting this right now

Something I’ve observed with my 12 year old’s friends is that as soon as they see the Steam Deck, they want to know what it is. They’re all familiar with the Switch, and the idea of being able to have a Switch-like thing that plays PC games is hugely appealing. Parents like it as well, because it doesn’t imply all the tech support challenges of a PC.

There’s absolutely no way any of those kids/parents would have been interested in a traditional PC setup, regardless of the games available on it.

If they get the pricing right, the Steam Machine should be able to do a similar thing but for living rooms. There’ll definitely be a “what is that?” quality to it.

I do wonder whether they’ve held off on the price partly to gauge this initial reaction and measure expectation. While market factors and production costs play a large part, Valve can essentially tune the impact of these devices to whatever they want by nudging the pricing one way or the other.
